The third Fish 4 Kidz Beach Fishing Competition for children
aged 5 – 16 was held on Eastbourne beaches on Sunday 27th April
2014. The free event is a unique
opportunity for children, with their families, to experience beach fishing
under the tuition of a local angler who had given up their day to act as Steward
for the event. Founded in 2012 by Steve Frost of Eastbourne Nomads Fishing Club,
Fish 4 Kidz attracts widespread support from all of the local fishing tackle
shops and angling clubs, and from tackle and bait suppliers.

The day began with the RNLI, with their new Eastbourne
Lifeboat, giving a demonstration in front of Eastbourne Angling Club, where the
booking-in for the competition took place.

Stewards then accompanied the young anglers with their families to their allocated beaches and assisted with setting up tackle, baiting up and with assisted casting.

For many of the participants, some as young as 5years old, this was their first experience of angling.
The
rods and reels use by anglers were donated by Rovex Masterline, much of the
angling equipment given out as prizes was donated by Pure Fishing, terminal
tackle given out in ‘goody bags’ to each child was donated by Tronix, along with
food and drink donated by Bookers.
A local fishing rig supplier made and donated all the rigs
used, and many local bait diggers got up early to dig bait which was donated
free to support the event.
A Sky TV ‘Tight Lines’ film crew filmed the event, so the children
involved, as well as having a great day out, will look forward to the
possibility of appearing on TV!

Conditions
were windy on the day and a good mix of fish were caught in this catch and
release competition, including Plaice, Flounders, Whiting, Bullheads, Eels,
Pout, Rockling, Weavers, Dabs, and Bass. There were three age categories in this
event, with the youngest group (age 5 – 9 years) being the largest (44
children!), which bodes well for the future of our sport.
